New use for Xmas trees!
Committee set up to look after defences

A COMMITTEE has been established to look after the sea defences at Llandanwg following a successful operation on Sunday to secure old Christmas trees along the coast in an attempt to help sand accumulate.
Members of the Pensam Yacht Club came up with the idea of collecting Christmas trees and placing them on the dunes that are being eroded by the sea - because if it broke through there would be no shelter for boats moored in the estuary.

Between 50 and 60 boats are moored in the Artro estuary during the summer months. If the dunes continue to be eroded the estuary will become exposed.
Following a meeting with representatives from Gwynedd Council, Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), the Environment Agency, Country Landowners Association (CLA) and other groups last Wednesday it was decided to set up a committee to take things forward.

Colin Mackie, who is a member of the committee, said: "The Country Landowners Association was the prime mover, but members felt that they would now prefer to take a more supportive role. As a result, a committee was formed.

"The first task facing the committee will be to find out who owns the land where the erosion is taking place, which lies between the Maes, owned by the National Trust and the Yacht Club premises. It is thought that it is owned by the Crown Marine Estates." Mr Mackie added: "Following an appeal we received 120 trees and on Sunday we erected the defences and everything went as planned."
